The "Barn"

The hub of all operations at the Rocky Bay Alpaca farm is a two storey, 4,000 sq. foot cedar board and batten farm building affectionately known as "the barn".  The barn includes our residential accommodation upstairs with the alpaca retail shop, farm stay unit, workshop, fibre processing  and animal handling facilities at ground level.

The barn, dug into the hillside overlooking Rocky Bay and the Pacific Ocean is situated at the approximate centre of our 33 acre farm ensuring complete tranquillity amongst the alpacas. The farm stay unit, with a view of the ocean beyond our horse riding arena has a private entrance.

The facilities:

The open plan unit is completely self sufficient with very comfortable furnishings.  Furnished with a single queen size bed the unit is  ideally suited for a couple.

A small family or good friends could also be accommodated on the very comfortable imported convertible couch.

All the essential gadgets are installed, including TV, video, and stereo (CD, Tape & AM/FM).

The galley is equipped with a Whirlpool "Crisp Series" microwave, capable of conventional   microwave cooking and grilling.

There's also a deep dish electric fry pan, kettle, and toaster.

Primary cooking is likely to be on the BBQ on the adjoining deck area.

Inside dining is available for 4 or outside on the deck for all the mates.
Lend a hand: If you are considering the move to the country life but you're just not quite convinced, join us in the day to day operations of a large alpaca stud. You'll be welcome to help as little or as much as you like to gain first hand experience in the actual farming of alpacas.

Thanks to the perpetual fine weather (almost!) of Northland, new crias (baby alpacas) are arriving throughout the year.  In addition to tending to the new arrivals, we're regularly involved with the feeding, mating, and general husbandry issues.  When the chores are done, there's nothing like a bucket of nuts and an hour long chat in the paddock with a few alpacas.

Just relax:    While an infatuation with alpacas will certainly enhance your visit, it's not a requirement.  Although somewhat of a biased opinion, Tutukaka is arguably one of the most beautiful spots on earth.

We're definitely in the "country", however, the farm is only 1Km from one of the finest marinas in New Zealand.  Tutukaka Marina is host to an impressive array of charter fishing and dive boats, commercial fishing vessels and yachts from around the world.  The marina complex alone accommodates a range of restaurant facilities ranging from a pizzeria to the well known "Schnappa Rock Cafe".

For the trekker, a brisk hike to the Tutukaka Lighthouse, standing proud atop the South Gable marking the entrance to the Tutukaka Marina is an excellent afternoon adventure commenced from the farm stay.  No need to drive anywhere.

For the rock-fisherman or beachcomber, enjoy a walk along our black sand/pebble beach.  There is no public access to our stretch of beach, however, you'll be able to walk across our farm to enjoy the secluded beach for fishing, diving or just an evening walk
Prefer the white sand and/or surf ?   We're about 10 minutes from several of Northland's most magnificent sand and surf beaches.   Sandy Bay is tops on the surfers list whereas the more tranquil waters of   Matapouri Bay/Beach seems to be preferred by those seeking a more relaxed swim or stroll along the sandy beach.
